Aztlán Roots is a confederation of Bay Area artists and DJs brought together by a love of conscious fun. As long-time residents of the Bay Area, we are very aware of the issues of inequality and violence faced by our communities, and that these issues are the manifestation of the colonizing mentality that has informed the construction of most of the societal structures that we live in.
Our name comes from the Aztec myth of Aztlán—the promised land, a term frequently used to describe the lands taken from México by the United States. The term refers to where we are, what we are working towards, and as a reminder of the social conditions we work within and against. Our symbol represents this as well—it is an Aztec-style depiction of the classic Rastafari symbol of a lion.

As DJs and artists, we try to empower our community by playing conscious music, expressing ourselves through art, and always passing along a positive message. Although we like to have fun, we still keep in mind our larger goal of societal change and know we can attract more of our community to our cause through enjoyable activities. We do emphasize charitable giving and community building—fully 20% of our proceeds go to charity and we try to do 20% of our gigs for charity (please contact us if you’d like to use our services!).
